    BCAO elects new executive and honours key leaders

    At its annual conference, the BC Association of Optometrists (BCAO) elected its new executive and honoured two Victoria Doctors of Optometry for their outstanding contribution to optometry in B.C.

    BCAO members elected five directors to the board: Dr. Sherman Tung of Vancouver, Dr. Trevor Miranda of Cobble Hill, Dr. Lloyd Mah of Coquitlam, Dr. Michelle Elliot of South Surrey and Dr. Surjinder Sahota of Abbotsford. The following officers were elected by the board: the North Shore’s Dr. Pavan Avinashi as secretary-treasurer, West Kootenay’s Dr. Jonathan Proctor as vice-president and Dr. Surjinder Sahota of Abbotsford, who was re-elected for a second term as president of the association.

    The Association’s board also includes Dr. Antoinette Dumalo of North Vancouver, who is past president, Dr. Paul Geneau of Nanaimo, who is B.C.’s representative to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, and two other Doctors of Optometry who are serving the remaining year of their two-year terms: Dr. Meghan Ashton of Vernon and Dr. Daniel Derksen of Williams Lake.

    Victoria’s Dr. Stephen Taylor was named Optometrist of the Yearby the Association for his contribution to the advancement of optometry at the local and provincial levels. Dr. Taylor is a well-known figure in the Victoria area, as he speaks and writes on vision and eye health and is a passionate advocate for optometry. He has been active in the Victoria Optometric Association and Treasurer for more than 20 years, and will celebrate 25 years in practice in Victoria in April.

    BCAO also honoured Victoria’s Dr. Paul Neumann with the coveted annual President’s Awardfor his advocacy and negotiation efforts on behalf of B.C. optometry. Joining BCAO’s council over a decade ago, Dr. Neumann has served as secretary-treasurer, vice president and as president from 2007 through 2009. The focus of his presidency was to prepare aging British Columbians for changes in their vision and eye health. Today, Dr. Neumann sits on the National Board of Optometric Services Inc.

    When presenting the award, BCAO President Dr. Surjinder Sahota said, “Dr. Neumann epitomizes a Doctor of Optometry who is passionate and committed to his profession and our association.”
