Make vision Safety part of your Halloween Costume This Year!
British Columbia, October 20, 2025
This Halloween, prioritize eye safety – especially when using cosmetic contact lenses or costume makeup, by following these simple tips below!
Ensure Your Cosmetic Contact Lenses Don’t Play Tricks On Your Eyes
Cosmetic contact lenses, often used to complete spooky Halloween outfits, can pose serious risks if not properly fitted, handled or cared for. Improper use can lead to infections, eye damage, or even permanent vision loss.
To reduce the risk, only purchase cosmetic lenses from authorized dispensers. Your local Optometrist can also ensure the lenses are sourced from an approved manufacturer.
Importantly, never share contact lenses with others.
Know What Makeup Around the Eyes is Safe
When it comes to costume makeup, safety around the eyes is key. Our top tips are:
- Use only hypoallergenic products and check Health Canada’s recalls list if you’re unsure about an ingredient.
- Avoid applying non-eye makeup, such as blush or lip liner near the lash line or inside the eyelid.
- Only use products specifically designed for the eye area, such as eyeliner or eyeshadow.
Keep Costumes Safe for Kids
Parents should take extra precautions with children’s costumes. Masks should not get in the way of vision, and sharp or pointed accessories should be avoided. If your child is accidentally poked in the eye, check for redness, pain, or changes in vision. Even seemingly minor injuries can be serious.
Visit your Doctor of Optometry or nearest emergency room if symptoms, such as pain or blurred vision persist or worsen.
Be Seen, Stay Safe at Night
As trick-or-treaters take to the streets after dark, visibility becomes a safety issue. Reflective tape or stickers on costumes and loot bags can help children be seen by drivers. Carrying a flashlight or wearing LED lights is also recommended.
