Shoreline Cleanup with a vision

Eye Care Professionals Unite for Eye Health and Environmental Impact

Vancouver, July 13, 2024BC Doctors of Optometry partnered with Alcon, Plastic Bank, and the BC Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons to spearhead a shoreline cleanup event. Set against the backdrop of declining eye exam rates post-COVID and escalating environmental concerns, this event aimed to shine a spotlight on the intertwined importance of clear vision and a clean planet.

The Shoreline Cleanup, which took place on July 13, saw eye care professionals donning gloves and armed with trash bags, scouring English Bay Beach for plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other debris detrimental to marine life and human health alike. Beyond the physical cleanup, the event featured a workshop turning trash into treasure, and we also heard from David Katz, CEO of Plastic Bank, and Jeroen Bastemeijer, General Manager for Alcon Canada.

By restoring the beauty of our shorelines, we’re also restoring focus on the importance of regular eye exams. Clear vision is not just about what we see, but how we see the world around us. It’s about taking responsibility for our health and the health of our planet.

Building a Stronger, Healthier Community

The success of this event was made possible by the enthusiastic participation of volunteers and the generous support of partnering organizations. Their combined efforts not only improved the local environment but also reinforced the importance of proactive healthcare practices.

By working together, we can create cleaner, healthier spaces for everyone to enjoy and promote practices that support our overall well-being.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who participated and encourage everyone to continue the spirit of this event every day.

Join Us in Our Ongoing Mission

Stay tuned for future events and initiatives as we continue our mission to promote environmental sustainability and health awareness. Together, we can make a lasting difference in our community and beyond.

Let’s keep the momentum going and strive for a healthier, cleaner, and more informed community!
